First Light by Rebecca Stead

Peter and his scientist parents are about to embark on an expedition to Greenland that will change their lives forever. Peter is very excited. He has never been allowed to go with his parents on their journeys until now. But when they arrive in Greenland, strange things start happening to Peter that he doesn't quite have an explanation for.

Thea is a 14 year old girl who has never seen the sun, the moon, or the stars. Her world is hidden deep inside a glacier. Her people were driven there thousands of years ago when they were accused of witch craft. Thea longs to continue the search for the path to the surface, something her mother died trying to do.

With Peter above, searching for answers to the mysteries in his life, and Thea below searching for the path to the surface, they find each other instead.

First Light is a very good, very well crafted book. If any of you have read When You Reach Me which is Stead's other book, it is nothing like First Light. It's hard to even tell they are written by the same author. First Light is more fantasy than realistic fiction. There are parts of both Thea's and Peter's worlds that involve a little bit of magic.

I think that the way Stead wrote this book is very clever. Her overall point is that global warming is happening and harming people and animals. The way things are supposed to happen, the timing of everything just isn't working anymore and we need to find a way to fix it. Now, Rebecca Stead did not write a book just on global warming. In fact, it's only actually mentioned a few times. The cleverness of the story is that even without having the characters talk about global warming, little hints are woven throughout the story so that you know it really is something that the characters are deeply concerned about.

You should definitely read this book if you like fiction and especially if you like stories about people who live in dystopian worlds. This book also gives you a lot of chances to think about what's going on and to make predictions about what's going to happen. If you are looking for a book that is going to be filled with facts and information about global warming, this is probably not the book for you. If you are looking for a book that will show you a perspective or a way of thinking about global warming that you might not have thought of before, then I highly recommend this book.

Do be warned though, I found that it does start off a little bit slow. But power through the slow parts because it is totally worth it!

Hello to everyone who reads this blog!

I will be writing reviews of all of the books I read this summer. I have made a goal for myself of reading at least twenty five books this summer. So far I have read one. I will be posting a review for that book soon. I will also try to write daily posts on anything that I did that day.
